What's been your worst experience at a restaurant?
I just had to answer this QoTD because I have a GREAT awful experience to share. I was a junior or senior in high school and my friend, Nate, and I were going to go out for Italian food and then out to see Dracula (remember when that came out!?). Anyway, we went to the restaurant and I ordered the ravioli. When it came, I took a big bite out of it and it was filled with HAIR!!!!! Hair ravioli! It was the nastiest thing I have ever felt in my mouth. Of course, I spit it out and we left. A given I'm sure but I've also never been back to that restaurant. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww
What movie did you expect would be terrible, but was actually really good?
Batman Begins. There is no way I would ever have gone and seen it in the theater if not for the fact that Cathy was visiting and she wanted to see it. I went and wound up thinking it was pretty fabulous! I guess I should thank her for that.
Who is the cheapest person you know? (Not frugal... just annoyingly cheap!)

There's really no point in naming names here so we'll just call this person "Penelope." Yes, I picked Penelope because it was the only name that popped in there that I don't know anyone called by. So there. Anyway, Penelope is cheap. Cheap in a way, though, that I can't stand. One time she asked me how I could go and eat at this local wine bar where a glass of wine is 8 bucks. She said there is NO WAY she would EVER spend that kind of money on a glass of wine. That said, though, Penelope goes out to eat *all the time.* Of course, it's to crappy chain places like Perkins and whatnot. I'd say, though, that she goes out to eat about 5 times a week. That's what ticks me off. She thinks she's all frugal but her 5 meals a week cost far more than my nice glass of wine. I have no problem going out and spending money on good food but I am not going to piddle my money away on crap (unless it's the occasional Taco Bell lunch that keeps me sane after a collection development meeting but I don't think that qualifies a "food" anyway). She also shops at Farm and Fleet for everything. She buys clothes there, and garden hoses, and food. Yum yum. Once she brought a package of cookies that she got there to a gathering. She went on and on about how cheap they were. Let me tell you, they tasted like pure Xanthan Gum. Ok, so I can't really say what Xanthan Gum tastes like but still....oh, and no one ate the damn cookies either.
How many times have you had your heart broken?
Submitted by BullDogg.
I assume this question implies "love" but I am easily heartbroken in other ways. My mom always said I was her tenderheart. I am less likely to have had my heart broken by love. That's maybe happened twice in all my years. And, while they were heartbreaking at the time, I can't compare them at all to what I'd feel like now if I lost love.
Love aside, I easily break. I feel a bit of loss every time I see roadkill. I had to kill a daddy long legs the other day and I almost cried. I had inadvertently injured the poor creature and had to then put it out of its misery. I had to swallow a few tears there.
All of this is actually surprising considering what a cold-hearted bitch I usually am (especially when dealing with work).

Have you ever served on a jury? What was your experience?

Yes. Just last August, actually. I got the letter right before my work contracted ended. I knew what it was right when I saw the return address and I can remember just praying that I wouldn't have to go during my summer vacation! I got so lucky. I start work back up every year on August 15th and the letter said I was to report on August 21st!. It was kind of a surreal experience. I just showed up, sat in a room with a bunch of people and watched some orientation video and then was called and marched right upstairs to the courtroom. We went to the jury box and a bunch of lawyers asked a bunch of questions and then they picked jurors. I was one of them. It was only a 3 day trial and we only deliberated for about 3 hours. Some dumbass got backed into on the Friday before Christmas in a crowded parking lot and claimed he was totally injured and needed pain and suffering $$ as well. The testimony pointed to yes, he was in a car that got hit (going about 5mph). The car he was riding in even had a baby in it and the baby's mother (she was driving and yet she was not injured!) testified that the baby didn't even wake up. And, some PI took pictures of him riding a bike and we got to see those after he claimed he couldn't work because of the pain. Of course, as soon as we were done with our verdict and the trial I went home and looked up this guy in the circuit court records. It appears he has a laundry list of charges against him for various assaults and he has also sued to the point of a jury trial before and lost. Nice guy. That said, jury duty was actually pretty cool. We were a jury from very different walks of life and very different opinions and yet were able to come together to come up with a verdict. And, we got free lunch catered in while we were deliberating. And, I got off work for 3 days.

What modern book do you think will be read in high school by the next generation of kids?
Submitted by Tom.
I am a cynical b&$ch but I can't believe they'll be reading books. Ok, I know I'm over the top and there are many intelligent, thoughtful youngsters out there right now but I also work in higher ed. and I am seeing the dregs spilling through the doors every day. One of the top "books" listed in our campus Facebook Zeitgeist is "don't read." Great. How pathetic.
What's a saying or phrase that's never made sense to you?
I hate hate hate when people say "Support Our Troops" or "Bring the Troops Home." Anything that identifies soldiers as troops. They aren't troops, people! They are soldiers. "Support Our Soldiers" or "Bring the Soldiers Home" fine. Otherwise, knock it the hell off. A troop is a body of soldiers. Aside from just plain being wrong, to me it dehumanizes the people behind the word. Instead of thinking of each soldier as an individual we just lump them all together under the troop umbrella. You would never say, "Oh, my nephew is a troop stationed in Iraq."
Additionally, this is a good time to give honorable mention to the word irregardless. Poor irregardless. It's a bastardized version of the words irrespective and regardless. Irr is a prefix meaning not and less is a suffix meaning without. As a result, you got a bad case of the double negatives on your hands. I suppose the word is accepted as general usage in the English language but it really isn't a word at all!
